Tretinoin is a powerful topical originally developed to treat acne but now a staple in the anti-ageing skin care routine. How it works:
Unlike retinol which works directly on the skin, tretinoin needs to be converted to retinoic acid by your body’s natural enzymes in order to work its magic. Because of this, tretinoin is much stronger than retinol but also has a higher incidence of irritation (known as retinoid dermatitis). It’s important to start off with a low concentration, every second night, gradually increasing your dosage & frequency until you reach a level that suits your skin.
The results are impressive, reducing the appearance of fine lines, fading hyperpigmentation, lightening melasma & improving skin hydration by encouraging the turnover of newer more vibrant cells. However, it’s not a miracle product & is unable to completely reverse more pronounced changes in the skin caused by the natural ageing process or sun damage.
