Gluten free brownies are a crowd-pleaser for all occasions. From birthday parties and tailgates to office farewells and neighborhood potlucks, they’re a delicious way to celebrate and socialize. While throwing together a boxed mix is obviously the easiest option, there’s something so satisfying about whipping up your own homemade batch of fudgy and decadent brownies. And if you have the right ingredients, making a batch from scratch is actually quite simple. You’ll just need 7 super common and affordable ingredients plus a large bowl – no fancy kitchen mixers, artisanal ingredients or crazy techniques needed.
You’ll start by mixing the dry ingredients in a large bowl. Make sure to whisk them well so that they’re completely combined. This helps to eliminate any clumps of flour and gives you that coveted crackly top. Once you’ve added the sugar and eggs, continue to whisk until the mixture is lighter in color, streams down from your whisk in pretty even ribbons, and when rubbed between your fingers there isn’t much grit. You’ll know you have the right consistency when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean with a few wet crumbs attached.
Once the batter is ready, add in the butter and chocolate and stir until everything is combined. If you’re adding in any additional mix ins like nuts or chips, add them now as well. Then pour the batter into your prepared baking pan. Bake for about 30 to 35 minutes, or until the brownies are set and a toothpick inserted into the center emerges with a few fudgy crumbs. You can bake them a little longer if you prefer your brownies extra cakey but be careful not to overbake them!
This recipe can be easily made vegan and dairy free by substituting the butter for melted vegan butter. I highly recommend Miyoko’s European Style Cultured Vegan Butter because of its creamy texture, but any brand should work! If you’re avoiding eggs, use an egg replacer and be sure to beat them well until they are at room temperature before adding.
Once the brownies are baked, let them cool for about 30 minutes before slicing into squares. If you’d like cleaner cuts, chill them in the fridge for about 1 hour to firm up before slicing. They’ll keep well in an airtight container at room temperature or in the fridge for 5-7 days (if you can hide them from yourself long enough)!
