One of the most popular upgrades to Apple’s latest iPhones is the removal of the home button. As a result, turning on or off your iPhone XR can seem like a complex process.
However, there are a few simple ways you can turn your iPhone XR on and off quickly and easily. Read on to learn how!
Press and hold the Side button
Whether you have a new iPhone XR or you are just getting to know your device, it is important to know how to turn it on and off. This will help you get the most out of your device and avoid potential problems with it in the future.
To turn on your iPhone XR, press and hold the Side button until you see the Apple logo on the screen. After this, enter the device passcode or unlock with Face ID to get to the Home Screen.
When you have an incoming call, you can press the Side button to end the call. This can be convenient if you’re on the phone but are uncomfortable answering it or pressing it by accident. If you want to prevent this, you can turn off the ability to end calls by pressing the Side button on iPhone XR and other iOS devices.
One of the most annoying things about the iPhone XR and other recent devices is that they don’t have a physical Home button like previous models did. This means that you’ll need to use new gestures to access your notifications, Control Center, and other features.
If you have an older model of an iPhone that does not have a Home button, you can still access these features by holding the Side and Volume Up buttons at the same time. This will allow you to view your notifications and Control Center without having to press the Home button, which can be a real pain.
You can also take a screenshot on your iPhone by pressing and holding the Side button and then releasing it. This will capture a screenshot of the entire screen, which you can then save or share.
Taking a screenshot of the entire screen is useful when you need to record videos or pictures with your camera or use an app that doesn’t support capturing the entire screen. You can then share these recordings with your friends and family.
If your device is unresponsive, you can try performing a force restart. This is slightly different than a standard shutdown, but it can be done when the slider to power off menu isn’t responding or the Home button doesn’t work.
Press and hold the Volume Up button
If you’ve recently had a software update or have a buggy app, the volume buttons on your iPhone might not be working as they should. Restarting your phone will reload the operating system and help your device get back to full functionality.
There are many reasons your iPhone’s volume buttons might not work properly, but the most common is a software problem. To fix this, follow the troubleshooting steps below and see if you can resolve the issue.
The first thing to do is check for any debris or dust that may have built up around the volume button. This can cause the buttons to stop working or become stuck. If you find any, it’s a good idea to clean the area out and see if that fixes the issue.
Another thing to do is turn on AssistiveTouch, which turns your phone’s volume buttons into virtual buttons that you can use to adjust the volume level on your phone. You can do this by going to Settings -> Accessibility -> Touch -> AssistiveTouch and turning it on.
Some third-party apps can also utilize the volume buttons on your iPhone to perform actions other than adjusting volume levels, like starting a video or a slow-mo video, taking photos in Photo, Portrait, and Pano mode, or creating custom shortcuts using Shortcuts.
However, this functionality is limited by the iOS version and your iPhone model. In particular, iPhone 7 and later models support these features.
You can use the long-press action on the volume up and down buttons to shoot burst photos and quick take videos in Camera and other Apple apps. You can also start a panoramic video by pressing and holding the Volume Up or Down button and letting go to stop it.
You can also use the Volume Up and Down button to adjust the ringer volume on your iPhone. If your ringer is too loud, you can drag the slider to lower it. The further left you drag the slider, the quieter it will ring.
Press and hold the Volume Down button
If you’re having trouble turning on your iPhone XR, you can press and hold the Volume Down button. This will force your iPhone to start up and display the Apple logo. This method is only recommended when other methods don’t work and won’t harm your phone’s software.
If your iPhone XR won’t turn on, it could be a hardware issue. It’s important to try to fix the hardware issues before you think about resetting your device or replacing it.
For example, if you have a cheap rubber case on your iPhone, it can jam the buttons and prevent them from working properly. Taking the case off and pressing the buttons will sometimes help to fix this issue.
It’s also possible that an app or other software is causing the volume buttons to become disabled. If this is the case, you can try restoring your backup to see if it will solve the problem.
To reset your iPhone, go to Settings and click General Settings. You’ll then need to scroll down and look for Shut Down, which will show a “slide to power off” slider.
After that, swipe the slider to the right to power off your iPhone. You’ll then need to wait about 30 seconds for your iPhone to restart.
If you have an older iPhone model, you can still shut it down by pressing and holding the Side button and one of the Volume buttons simultaneously. This will display the power-off slider along with other emergency sliders like SOS and Medical ID.
Some of these shortcuts are exclusive to newer iPhone models, but you can still use them on an old device if you have iOS 10 or later. For instance, you can use the Volume Up and Volume Down buttons to take burst photos or QuickTake videos on your iPhone.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button
If your iPhone XR won’t turn on, there are a few different reasons that can cause this to happen. They include software errors, physical or liquid damage, battery issues, and more. The good news is that most of these problems can be easily fixed.
First, it’s important to know how to press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on your iPhone XR. This will help you restart your phone when it won’t respond to touch, has a frozen or black screen of death, or is stuck on the Apple logo.
Depending on the model of your iPhone XR, you can use the top button or side button to wake or put your phone to sleep. The top button will also mute incoming alerts and sounds. You can also switch to silent mode by pressing the ring/silent switch.
To shutdown your phone, you can also press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Volume Down buttons together. After a few seconds, you’ll see a red slider appear on your screen that you can drag to turn off your device.
If you have an older iPhone with a Home button, the same process works. Just press and hold the Side and Volume Down buttons until the red slider appears, then drag the Power Off slider to turn off your iPhone.
The newer iPhone Xs and Xs Max devices do not have a Home button, so you will need to press and hold the Side and Volume buttons together until the red slider appears, then drag the Sleep/Wake or Volume Up button to turn off your phone.
Once your phone has shut off, press and hold the Sleep/Wake or Volume Up buttons again to start it up again. This will reset all of the apps and settings on your iPhone.
If your iPhone XR is unresponsive, it’s probably time to force restart it. This will delete all the current content on your device, but it won’t erase any data stored in the memory. The process will take some time, but it should get your iPhone XR back up and running.
