In the 12th and 13th centuries women’s clothes were extremely simple. They wore shifts, which were linen garments that served as both nightgowns and slips. They would wear them for weeks at a time, especially in winter, without laundering them. Underneath a shift a woman would wear a gown, and over it she would put on a petticoat. Petticoats were made of wool, silk or cotton. Women would wear at least two petticoats and often as many as five for warmth. They also wore stays, which were frames of whalebone or steel wire that created a rounded shape in the front of their dresses.In the 1920s a major revolution in women’s clothing occurred when knickers were replaced with skirts. In the 1930s women’s skirts became much shorter. Currently skirts are worn in a wide variety of lengths and styles. Some skirts are fitted to hug the waist, while others are more casual and loosely draped.
